Glass Mosaics

I After trying a number of mediums, oil, watercolors and charcoal, I found mosaics. I have been working with stained glass for a few years now and enjoying exploring it as my “paint” to recreate images of flora and fauna in nature.

Water Color

There is a pervasive uncertainty about the future today. Now in my mid 60s, my life seems rolled flat like a map, the edges visible. I am interested in what it means to make art with this uncertainty. Creating work that feels provisional and process focused is giving me space to play with ideas. I allow images to emerge, I coax them into visibility and am often surprised by what appears. I hang out with fiction writers a lot and they encourage me with their character driven stories that allow emergence and surprise. I recently made illustrations for a film about the life of the poet who wrote America The Beautiful and again I saw this creative process of working and reworking with the changing realities of our world, imagining possibilities and giving others permission to imagine with us. Pulling a vision of hope for our future into visibility is the work of artists, we pay attention, possibility is our language.

Functional Ceramics

My work starts with functional pottery, mostly made on the wheel. I then use colour and carving to feature uncomplicated designs featuring the Pacific Northwest. My goal is to display the easy beauty of our environment on to everyday useful things. I hope my craft brings a little happiness and joy to everyone.

Color has been a source of joy and energy for me, and painting is fulfilling my desire to create and work with color.  Pastel is my main medium; it offers a delightful tactile experience when I blend colors on a slightly rough paper like Pastelmat. The tooth of the paper enables me to use many layers of pastel, and the result is rich with depths of pure color pigment.  I find inspiration in beautiful landscapes which I avidly photograph anytime I am on a walk or on a trip anywhere in the Pacific Northwest, where I live, on occasions in my native Switzerland or in Japan, also one of my favorite countries.

I need to be deeply looking at my subject as I wish to understand all the nuances in color, light and shadows. I pay attention to and appreciate the intricacies of design in nature, whether it is on a large scale like clouds or as the minute details of an insect wing.  I use specific colors to convey emotion and the mood of my painted message.

Besides nature providing vast subjects, I am interested in exploring inner thoughts and dreams and have an ongoing series of paintings like “Dream Quest of the Pink Horse”.  I enjoy painting abstracts to express emotions and especially, I have painted emotions   extensively in my big series of Grief Paintings using water soluble wax pastel as a medium.

Lynn Federspiel-Young

Watercolor and more

I am a watercolor artist that likes to experiment with other mediums.  l paint things I see in my daily life. I simplify my subjects, deciding what to leave in and what to take away. I look for shapes and shadows that I can connect. My art is an adventure of how things will turn out . I like losing myself in the process.

Watercolor

I’m a watercolor artist based in the Skagit Valley, with a background in theatre set design. My work is rooted in a desire to capture light and atmosphere — the quiet beauty of a place at a specific moment in time. Through watercolor,  I aim to capture not just a scene, but a sense of presence — how it feels to stand in a particular place at a particular time. Painting for me is a way of paying attention, of honoring the place I live and the light that defines it.I’m a watercolor artist based in the Skagit Valley, with a background in theatre set design. Margaret Horak

Watercolor

I find inspiration daily in the natural beauty of Skagit County. I also frequently create commissioned works based on a client’s idea or image. I have created numerous posters and flyers for local events and have donated art works to many worthy local non-profit organizations and causes.

You can find me teaching watercolor painting at Ristretto twice a month on Wednesdays, at 5:30-7:30.

I also offer watercolor painting trips. We’ll be visiting to Santa Fe, NM (October 2026). I also host plein air painting groups locally. Contact me for more info.

You’ll notice that my work is generally not under glass. I use a cold wax technique that protects the art as well as making it easier to see without the glare.

I am a member of the North West Watercolor Society, Urban Sketchers, Anacortes Sketchers group and The Painted Ladies (a watercolor group). I plan to continue my lifelong passion of artistic discovery through painting and music. Look for me on Facebook (@marghhorak), Instagram (@marghorak) and online at www.margarethorak.com

Mixed Media

I explore paper limits by manipulating it into shapes, forms, and colors.

Lloyd Houston

Mixed Media

My art comes from rage and paranoia, but in a fun way.

Gene Jaress

Limited Edition Woodcut Prints

The ancient art of printmaking affords me a balance between artistic expression and technical expertise. I draw the initial image, make a color rendition, transfer it to blocks, and carve the blocks, one for each color. This is followed by ink color mixing, paper choices, and printing

Tia Whitney Kurtz

Ceramic Sculpture

My love of figurative clay sculpture started with a workshop in 2010. The feel of the clay in my hands while watching the personality of the figure as it comes to life has had me hooked ever since.

This summer I have been invited to be one of three featured artists in the 2026 Focus Gallery, presented as part of Art at the Depot during the 2026 Anacortes Arts Festival.

Andy Porter

Nature/Landscape Photography

For me photography has always been about travel and visiting wondrous places. Capturing images that communicate some small part of what the place is really like is not easy! Mountains and flowers, canyons and sunsets, these are my favorite things.

Judy Thomas

Ceramics

I create in clay.  I handbuild using low fire terracotta clay. For years I have been a passionate gardener.  I am inspired by nature. Doing pieces for the garden and pieces with nature themes bring m tremendous joy.  You may, also, see a bit of whimsy woven into much of my work.

I hope the happiness I feel creating my pieces shows through for you to experience.

Katie Trent

Fused glass, stained glass,
glass mosaics

After more than 40 years in the Minneapolis area, I moved back to the PNW in 2024, and have been delighted to join such a vibrant and welcoming arts scene. I have been playing around with glass for over 25 years. I started with traditional stained-glass pieces, which I still love to create, and moved into mosaics and then fused glass. Each of these art forms requires a different set of skills and highlights the unique qualities of this medium in special ways. With stained-glass pieces, I can create custom windows designed specifically for someone that will fit perfectly into a window or space. Mosaics are a tedious but rewarding use of glass and can be surprisingly artistic when rendering an image. It’s almost like “paint-by-number” with little glass slivers. Glass fusing, also known as “warm glass” is extremely varied in style and technique and requires some patience while learning how glass responds to heat. There is a certain amount of trust when committing a piece into the kiln, not a small amount of swearing, and a lot of “c’est la vie” when things don’t come out as expected. I teach classes in all three of these glass techniques and find that to be extremely rewarding. I offer my classes through The Jansen Art Center in Lynden with some classes held in my Mount Vernon studio and others in Lynden.

The process of making sculpture is, for me, a creative journey, a quest for discovering the stories that bring meaning to our lives
